Indulge your senses with a true treasure. This magnificent traditional Berber wooden door is hand crafted out of cedar wood readily available from the forests of the Middle Atlas and the Rif mountain ranges. Created by skilled Berber artisans of Taroudant, the door is impressive with its delicate and bold carving, sacred tribal symbolism, precision and accented abstract decorative details.

The domineering motif of the carving is a mihrab – a niche in the wall of a mosque that points in the direction of Mecca. The door’s composition consists of three horizontal fields. The upper field exhibits three finely carved squares: the central one has two mihrabs which can also be viewed as two human figures. Quite possibly, this square can be considered as the main element of the door’s design. The two square images on both sides of it resonate with the squares of the middle horizontal field, and the lower field also features the repeating mihrab shapes. We can ascertain that the spiritual connotation of the mihrab appeals for the protection of the living space behind the door.

The indentation on the intricate 3D carving of the door is 3 cm deep, while the door itself is about 4 cm thick. The door has a fabulous front iron knocker and numerous massive bolts. The back of the door possesses a handle installed on rectangular metal panel with a geometric Berber engraving on it together with some authentic nails and fastening. The back door handle was used as a knocker as well. The panel is 16cmx5cm. The metal on the back panel is slightly rusty which conveys the door’s antique origin and adds an element of vintage charm. The lock itself is an ingenious wooden mechanism, fully intact. On the back of the door you can also find the reinforcing bars which are about 5 cm wide. The door exhibits multiple signs of human activities, weather influences and other traces of time. Whether you install this timeless piece of art as a part of your home architecture or use it as a decoration in your living or dining room, stairway or hallway, it will continue to share with you the beauty of Moroccan history.
